Can You Hold a Garage Sale on a New Driveway?

Clean Garage
Summer is a great time of year to hold a garage sale - unless you have a new asphalt driveway. New asphalt can be soft, especially when the temperature outside is warm, and the hotter it gets, the softer the asphalt becomes.
During the first year, many homeowners must be careful to prevent their driveway from becoming warped in hot temperatures. Holding a garage sale on a new asphalt driveway can do damage to the driveway surface, if you're not careful. These tips can help.

Give Your Driveway Time Before Planning Your Garage Sale

Asphalt needs time to cure before it can be used. You should wait at least 30 days before planning a garage sale, as this gives your asphalt driveway some time to harden. You can walk and drive on your asphalt driveway within three to five days of installation, though. Even if you can't wait 30 days before holding your event, wait at least five days after installation before having a garage sale at your home.

Water Down the Driveway First

Spray cold water from a hose on your driveway before you set anything up on the driveway surface. Spraying down your driveway with cold water can help cool off and firm up the asphalt. You should do this especially if you aren't able to start setting up the garage sale until later in the day when the driveway is already quite hot.

Place Boards Under Table and Chair Legs

Chair and table legs can dig into new, soft asphalt, causing little indentations in the driveway surface. The best way to prevent this from happening is to set up the tables and chairs in your yard and on your sidewalk, away from the driveway.
However, this may not always be possible. If you must set up a table or chairs on your driveway, place a board underneath the the legs to distribute the weight evenly over the driveway.

Avoid Bicycle Kickstands

Table and chair legs aren't the only objects that can do damage to your driveway during a garage sale. Bicycle kickstands can also cause indentations on the asphalt. If you're selling any bicycles, wheel them out to another part of the yard, or set up bicycles in the garage itself, to keep them off of your driveway.

Watch Where You Park

Some people use their driveway for parking instead of selling things when they set up a garage sale. If you plan to have strangers park on your driveway, be aware that some people may park very close to the edge of your driveway in order to fit more vehicles in the space.
If this happens, the edges of your new driveway can become cracked and may even crumble. The edges of any asphalt driveway is the most fragile part of the entire structure. Parking in this spot when the driveway is newly installed can cause the edges of the driveway to break.
Set up a rope around the edges of your driveway to prevent cars from parking too close to the sides. Likewise, if you're trying to sell something large and very heavy in the garage sale, like a motorcycle, avoid parking it too close to the driveway's perimeter.
